Microsoft has acquired Winternals Software LP, a privately held company based in Austin, Texas, that provides Windows-based enterprises with systems recovery and data protection solutions in addition to offering a freeware tools Web site called Sysinternals.
The company also hired its founders Mark Russinovich as a technical fellow for the Microsoft Platforms & Services Division and Bryce Cogswell as software architect in the Windows Component Platform Team.
Winternals Software provided commercial systems recovery and data protection solutions in addition to offering the free Sysinternals tools site.
Mark Russinovich in his blog wrote, "I’m very pleased to announce that Microsoft has acquired Winternals Software and Sysinternals. Bryce Cogswell and I founded both Winternals and Sysinternals (originally NTInternals) back in 1996 with the goal of developing advanced technologies for Windows."
Mark says the Sysinternals site will remain up 'for now', but there is no word on whether or not they will continue to be maintained and improved.
Winternals products support IT professionals in numerous ways, providing intelligent enterprise recovery solutions, network defragmentation solutions and powerful system tools, all focused on reducing the total cost of ownership for Microsoft-based businesses. Sysinternals enjoys a strong and active community of systems administrators and support personnel, averaging about a million visitors per month.
Microsoft said is evaluating how the Winternals products and technologies can be integrated within Microsoft offerings to maximise customer value.
