Since Macromedia (now Adobe) redesigned its highly-successful PC-based Flash technology for use on cellphones and other portable devices in 2003, demand has taken off. Initially with NTT DoCoMo in Japan, Flash Lite-enabled handsets are now operating on numerous wireless networks in the Far East with plans to spread worldwide this year. Strategy Analytics, the global research and consulting company, recently released, "Flash-Enabled Handset Forecast: Flash Lite Ready for Global Penetration," from its Handset Component Technologies Service, pointing to the triple-digit growth rate in unit sales of Flash Lite -enabled phones over the last two years.
Stuart Robinson, Director of the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service, comments, Over 100 handsets that support Flash Lite are already available or pre-announced. The top seven handset manufacturers have signed up with Adobe to license Flash Lite on their handsets. During 2005 a total of 38 million Flash Lite-enabled handsets were shipped and this figure is expected to rise to around 216 million in 2010. This report provides regional forecasts for Flash Lite-enabled handsets and a list of all known devices supporting Flash Player SDK and Flash Lite. |
