Software developer Sybase Inc. has reported higher first quarter earnings driven by its growing demand for its mobile and wireless business. Net income for the quarter rose to USD 17.3 million, or 19 cents a share, compared with net income of USD 13.3 million, or 14 cents a share for the year-ago quarter. Excluding amortisation of certain expenses including certain purchased intangibles, stock-based compensation, and restructuring costs, the company had net income of USD 22.7 million, or 25 cents a share. Revenue for the quarter rose 2 percent to USD 195.0 million.
Speaking about the forthcoming second quarter, John Chen, Chairman, CEO said, "We expect solid growth in our data management business in the second half of this year. We believe this growth will be principally driven by ASE 15.0 and its options, including encryption and partitioning, combined with strength in those solutions that help customers extract data from various data sources and make that information available to the mobile worker."
For the second quarter, the company expects to earn 24 cents a share including stock-based compensation expense, on revenue in the range of USD 210 to USD 215 million.
For 2006, the company expects total revenue growth of 6 percent, pro forma earnings of about USD 1.29 and GAAP earnings of about USD 1.07.
