DreamWorks Team Up with Intel to Fashion 3-D Films

Animated-movie studio DreamWorks Animation SKG and chipmaker Intel have joined forces to work together on 3-D filmmaking technology.

Under this alliance, Intel will supply the latest high-performance processing technologies, including future chips with multiple processing cores, and its software engineers will help to optimize DreamWorks' applications for these advanced processors.

"Technology plays a significant role in enabling our artists to tell great stories. By utilizing Intel's industry-leading computing products, we will create a new and innovative way for moviegoers to experience our films in 3D," said DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg in a statement.

The move to Intel was based on the capabilities of two forthcoming Intel chips, which would speed up many computing operations and help the studio's planned shift next year to 3-D animation, DreamWorks Animation said. Intel and DreamWorks' first major collaboration will be the feature film Monsters vs. Aliens, scheduled to hit theaters in 2009.

In addition to working with DreamWorks, Intel plans to develop and promote the development of 3-D content on its platform in other markets, such as home theater, personal computers, videogames, online virtual worlds, and mobile devices.
