Motorola’s Digital Radio System Deployed in HKIA

The Hong Kong Airport Aurthority said Monday that it has selected Motorola’s digital radio system for Hong Kong International Airport(HKIA).

The new TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) system aims to enhance the efficiency of radio communications for airport operations at HKIA.

HKIA serves more than 47 million passengers a year and is one of the busiest aviation and logistic hubs in Asia and the world. It is currently experiencing rapid growth in passenger and cargo traffic, which corresponds to a need for more user capacity in its airport communications system.

To meet rising requirements, the Hong Kong Airport Authority has decided to upgrade its existing analogue system to Motorola’s Dimetra IP system, the latest in TETRA technology that will provide HKIA with more efficient and failsafe radio communications.

Motorola Dimetra IP is an enhanced IP-based TETRA solution that is highly flexible and scalable and is able to support voice, messaging, and mobile applications—including remote access to information databases and image transmission—over a single network. Through just one system, HKIA will be able to provide seamless communications and full interoperability across users in airport operations such as airport security, operations maintenance, baggage handling and other ground handling services.

“Airport operators worldwide are looking for efficient and failsafe communications to improve operating efficiency and ensure passenger safety and security standards. We are pleased that the Hong Kong International Airport has selected Motorola as the provider of TETRA radio communications solutions. It reflects the growing demand for Motorola TETRA solutions in the industrial, commercial and transportation markets,” said Phey Teck Moh, vice president, Motorola Government and Public Safety, Asia Pacific, Enterprise Mobility Solutions.

Motorola’s radio communications solutions specially tailored for the airport environment are also used in other Asian airports such as the new Bangkok International Airport (Suvarnabhumi) in Thailand, Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia and some 20 airports in China.
