New Centre in Singapore to Build Best Practices in Software Quality and Security

Singapore’s first statutory board of the Ministry of Defence, The Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), and Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) one of the region’s tertiary institution signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch the NYP-DSTA Centre for Software Quality and Security on 14th August 2007.

The Centre, located at NYP, is set to offer real world experience on advanced information technology and software testing to more than 3000 students as well as industry professionals over the next three years.

DSTA and NYP said they are working with IT industry players such as Singapore Computer Systems, Borland, Fortify Software, IBM, McCabe Software, Parasoft Corporation, Systex and SPI Dynamics to deliver more engaging and on-demand learning to students and IT professionals.

NYP will incorporate software quality assurance and testing methodologies at the Centre. Experts in software QA and testing from DSTA will share their experiences with the learners as well as provide insights into government and commercial companies’ software development processes, software testing and applications of software security. The learners will work on projects from the industry, and develop the necessary skills to meet the demanding challenges of developing quality, reliable and secure enterprise solutions. To this end, commercial companies can have a wider pool of IT professionals to tap on to enhance the quality and reliability of the software that they develop.

Chief Executive of DSTA, Mr Richard Lim, who mooted the idea for this collaboration, said, “As one of Singapore’s key investors in IT, we see an increasing demand to interconnect disparate systems into networked systems. Software safety and quality assurance therefore becomes an important component to help identify potential issues and allow for fine-tuning before implementation.

“This results in more robust and resilient enterprise solutions. This initiative is a concerted effort between the public and private sectors to equip IT professionals with adequate software quality and testing expertise to meet the demands from strategic industries such as defence, homeland security and others. ”

“We are glad to partner DSTA in setting up this Centre to build new capabilities in software quality and security. This collaboration will allow DSTA and NYP to pool resources and jointly develop training programmes for students and IT professionals. In addition, the Centre will benefit industries by providing quality, reliable and secure solutions,” said Mr Edward Ho, deputy principal for development, Nanyang Polytechnic.
