Anatomy of an Eclipse RCP Application

Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) is a runtime platform for delivering your Java applications on multiple platforms. RCP is far more than just a widget toolkit; it is effectively rich client "middleware" that provides a comprehensive platform for building and deploying applications that are modular, extensible, and updatable. Many organisations (including BEA, IBM, NASA, and Novell) are using the richness of the open source Eclipse platform to deliver high quality applications that provide rich user experiences.

At JAX India 2007, Bjorn Freeman-Benson will walk through some of the key points in the code for an Eclipse RCP application.

Bjorn Freeman-Benson Technical Director, Eclipse Foundation.

He has dabbled in applications and user interfaces, but returns, like the swallows to San Juan Capistrano, to his three foci: hardware, software, and process (embedded devices, programming languages, and software engineering). Bjorn has worked for OTI, Amazon.com, Rational, and Gemstone, along with a career as a university professor. He has an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Washington, and is happy to talk at length about his passion for orienteering and/or his love of flying.

Attend Chris’ talk and gain a good understanding into factoring of application code into components (OSGi bundles), the use of extension points to provide hooks that allow others to extend and customise the application, the inclusion of custom widgets, and leveraging components as both an independent RCP application and as plug-ins to an existing Eclipse environment.
