PHP stands at fourth place in the April 2007 edition of the TIOBE Programming Community index. Its position has remained the same since last month, while Java continues to hold the top spot.

Java held the top position in April 2007 as well, recording an increase of 18.360%. PHP has stayed in the same fourth position with a rating of 8.639% within a year. C, on the other hand, has maintained the same second position since last year. There is a new last entrant in the list is Fortran with a percentage of 0.613%. Transact-SQL has made a tremendous rise from the twenty-sixth position to the nineteenth position in a year’s time.

In long-term trends, PHP shows a significant jump from October 2001 to February 2002. As the graph on TIOBE’s web site indicates, PHP has been charting an uneven course, facing ups and just as many downs. However, PHP’s position as of April 2007 is constant with April 2006.
