GigaSpaces: 'POJOs' Offer Storage in Java

GigaSpaces Technologies has integrated McObject’s Perst open source, object-oriented all-Java embedded database for real-time data management in its distributed application technology. GigaSpaces embeds Perst in version 5.1 of its software, where Perst provides persistence for applications that are deployed and optimised using GigaSpaces’ distributed solution.

Perst’s all-Java architecture was a good fit for GigaSpaces, the company claimed. The company’s software products are developed in Java, including JavaSpaces, a simple unified mechanism for dynamic communication, coordination, and sharing of objects between Java technology-based network resources. Perst is integrated within the GigaSpaces In-Memory Data Grid , as an object-oriented database offered as an alternative to a relational database due to its performance and minimal resource (CPU cycles and memory) requirements, the officials at the company said.

"An advantage of Perst is its ability, as an object-oriented database, to store application data as Plain Old Java Objects (POJOs), rather than requiring translation of this data to a relational format", said Guy Nirpaz, vice president for research and development of GigaSpaces.

Towards the end of August 2006, Satyam Computer Services, a consulting and IT technology services company, had formed an alliance with GigaSpaces Technologies to provide solutions for Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and grid environments.

Under the terms of the agreement, GigaSpaces will provide innovative software, while Satyam will deliver implementation and IT services in its partner’s software products. The results will include low-latency, scalable solutions that will be especially useful for companies that rely on high-volume transactional applications, said Satyam.

"This partnership will enhance our capacity to handle large, resource-intensive projects smoothly. At the same time, it will enable us to respond more effectively to significant and growing demand," said Geva Perry, executive vice president of business development at GigaSpaces.

Two years ago, Satyam invested in a dedicated Grid Computing practice and the company is establishing another centre dedicated to grid technology in Chennai.
