RadioShack this week sent layoff notices via e-mail to several hundred employees The RadioShack layoffs occurred at the company's Fort Worth, Texas, headquarters, when 400 workers received e-mails saying, "The work force reduction notification is currently in progress. Unfortunately your position is one that has been eliminated," according to the Associated Press.
A spokesperson from the company stated that employees had been forewarned that layoffs would be made electronically, and if employees had any questions prior to the notification, they could ask from a company intranet page. Unfortunately, that explanation did little to placate criticism that the overall approach was incredibly impersonal and disrespectful to the recipients of the e-mails. A University of North Texas professor stated that he had never heard of such a large electronic layoff before.
One personnel expert suggests that such electronic notices are best avoided. "Terminating someone carries a lot of emotion on both sides of the fence, and should be done in the most humane way possible," said, Polly Wright, a senior consultant for HR Consultants Inc., Johnstown, Penn., said. "We all have bumps in life, and we should get help in working through those bumps with the least amount of anxiety and trauma."
