Unisys Adopts Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processor 7100 Series
Unisys Corporation has announced its commitment to the new Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processor 7100 Series codenamed 'Tulsa' as a key step in development of its recently unveiled next-generation server architecture. Unisys was among the first system providers to announce support for the new Dual-Core Intel Xeon platform.
The new Dual-Core Xeon processors provide virtualisation capabilities that Unisys plans to extend with hypervisor software it is developing for the next-generation architecture to optimise application performance, resource utilisation and power consumption. Virtualisation enables applications using different operating environments to run simultaneously in a single partitioned processor space on a computer system. The operating environments can share application workloads dynamically, optimising resource usage and increasing operational efficiency.
Unisys also plans to begin delivering models of the current ES7000/one server line incorporating the Dual-Core Intel Xeon platform in the fourth quarter of 2006.
According to Intel, the Dual-Core Intel Xeon 7100 Processor can boost transaction performance up to 70 percent and double the Java server performance of the previous generation of technology.
Commenting on the value of those enhancements, Colin Lacey, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Server Group, Unisys, said, “Unisys customers increasingly seek to deploy real-time infrastructure to meet dynamic transaction requirements and modernise their application environments to accommodate both legacy and open source applications. By enhancing the performance advances in the Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors with Unisys expertise in virtualisation and system management, Unisys can help customers meet those objectives and benefit from quantum advances in server scalability and price/performance.”
“Unisys has optimised the performance and scalability of Intel platforms for enterprise computing, delivering new levels of business value to their customers,” said Kirk Skaugen, vice president, Digital Enterprise Group, Intel. “Unisys is building on the advanced functionality of the Dual-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 7100 Series in the data centre, while optimising customers’ cost of IT ownership.”
