Yahoo has announced the release of a new search engine tool called Yahoo Search Builder that lets publishers hand pick the web sites they want included in their search engine's index. The service lets visitors easily add 'Yahoo Search' to their web sites. Site publishers can tailor the code to match their existing look and feel. Also, publishers can enhance the search algorithm to suit their focus areas. If publishers don't want to assemble the index manually, they can also tune the main Yahoo search engine to focus on the topic of their choice.
Yahoo also noted the results can be personalized. A form available to logged-in users allows publishers to customise the web search and news search they place on their sites. Yahoo expects the service will appeal to publishers that want to attract visitors by offering specialised search engines that limit results to a specific area. For example, the publisher of a baseball blog could build a search engine that only returns results from sites devoted to the sport.
Publishers can specifically include and exclude certain domains and keywords for web search. News search can be limited to a timeframe of 30 days or less, to a series of sites, and to certain categories. Yahoo will also provide publishers with statistics about their search engine, such as the most popular queries and the overall usage level.
