Microsoft has announced details about possible upgrade path for customers looking to the update to Vista, the long-awaited upgrade to Windows. Microsoft said that Windows 2000 cannot be upgraded to Vista.
Microsoft said that Vista has to be 'cleaned' installed. "If you are buying a new PC before Windows Vista is available, look for the computers designated as Windows Vista Capable or Windows Vista Premium Ready," warns Microsoft.
Microsoft has not designed an upgrade path for Windows XP x64 version and will continue to have the same requirements. However the final release of Vista will include both 32-bit and 64-bit iterations of the operating system.
Microsoft said Windows XP Professional can me upgraded only to the Business and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista as features built into XP Pro not being added to the Home Basic and Home Premium SKUs Vista.
"Upgrading to Windows Vista with a clean install means that you should back up your files and settings, and then install Windows Vista. After the installation is complete, you'll need to reinstall all of your applications and load your backed up files onto your PC," said Microsoft.
