Chelsio Communications Inc. has announced its standalone iSCSI Target 3.0 software, which enables enterprises to create high-performance IP (Internet Protocol) SANs (storage area networks) using their existing Linux server and storage hardware. The enterprise-ready Linux iSCSI (Internet SCSI) Target 3.0 is available for leading storage platforms, the company said in a statement.

The Chelsio iSCSI Target 3.0 can turn any Linux partition into a high-performance iSCSI target, Chelsio said. This storage can be assigned to any computer on the enterprise Ethernet network to provide users with a commercial-grade IP SAN instantly, the company said. Chelsio iSCSI Target 3.0 software adds key features that increase redundancy, scalability and robustness, and enable advanced Ethernet-based storage applications in enterprise data centres, with easy-to-use loadable software, using existing volume storage and server platforms, Chelsio added.

Chelsio's iSCSI Target software has set the performance standard in the industry, and it matches well with the high performance iSCSI arrays of DSG Storage Inc. of Ontario, Canada, DSG said. The company is pleased to be able to offer Chelsio's iSCSI Target 3.0 software as part of its IP storage solutions, DSG Storage added.

Chelsio’s iSCSI Target 3.0 software will have an impact on the Linux storage market as it enables enterprises to cost-effectively deploy business-critical IP SANs using volume Linux hardware, Chelsio said. This new release works extremely well across a broad selection of Ethernet adapters, the company said. The software is also suitable for optimal use with Chelsio’s Storage Accelerator products to deliver the best performance and high availability requirements for storage networking and unified wire applications, Chelsio added.

The iSCSI 3.0 Target software supports a broad array of hardware and software platforms, including Chelsio T3-based Ethernet adapters and a number of third party Ethernet NICs (network interface controllers), Chelsio said. The software supports popular RAID (redundant array of independent disks), SAS (Serial-Attached SCSI), SATA (Serial-ATA) and other storage devices, the company said. The software also supports various Linux kernel versions and distributions, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Suse Linux Enterprise Server, Chelsio added.

The optimised iSCSI target stack provides support for greater than 2 TB (terabyte) disks, which allows deployment of large disk arrays, back-up applications and high definition video server applications, Chelsio said. The software also supports Microsoft Cluster Service for high availability applications, and MPIO (Multi-Path I/O) for fault tolerance against single points of failure and load balancing of I/O (Input/Output) data traffic for better application performance, Chelsio added.
