As security threats have proliferated and evolved, enterprises today are facing dangers that would have been unimaginable only a few years ago. To assess the current state of the security market and the effectiveness of the technology, Heavy Reading conducted a global survey of nearly 200 enterprise security customers, eliciting their attitudes and expectations about their security, their purchasing plans, and the problems they encounter in formulating effective security strategies. This report provides a comprehensive view of the security market from the perspective of end-user organisations, including capsule analysis of the products and market strategies of 33 major security vendors.
Enterprises face many security problems apart from issues surrounding physical security, organisations have to contend with everything from Spam to malware, spoofing, hacking, denial of service attacks, and the loss and theft of data and intellectual property. The costs of these problems can be colossal, and they can include not only the cost of remediation, but also the loss of productivity, credibility, investor confidence, and in extreme cases viability.
In theory, it should be fairly easy to protect enterprises from most threats, especially if they originate from outside the firewall. Unfortunately, the world is not that simple, and organisations face threats from lone individuals as well as organised crime, originating not only outside the firewall, but also from inside. Indeed, the threats from inside an enterprise's firewalls can be every bit as dangerous as those from outside.
The report delivers a comprehensive view of the security market from the perspective of end-user organisations. As with any market, there is a lot of hype about certain products and services, which ones are necessary, which ones will generate strong traction, and so forth. The report investigates the major security products, industry initiatives, and vendors, it also provides guidance on what enterprise customers think about the state of their security, what they are buying and planning to buy, and the roadblocks they are encountering in terms of their buying strategies and overall security strategies. The report is designed to present the perceptions of customers, unmediated by the views, needs, and biases of vendors.
The survey gauges the market by looking at the enterprise professional, understanding the attitudes and expectations about information and network security technologies and deployments. Nearly 200 respondents participated in the invitation-only survey, representing a rich mix of company sizes and vertical market sectors.
Security threat is the biggest problem enterprises face. We’ll have to wait and see if technology can tackle the vulnerabilities in the system or if technology will be used to create new threats to compromise the system. Heavy Reading’s survey analysed attitudes and expectations about security and problems encountered in formulating effective security strategies. Hopefully this information can be utilised to combat future security threats.
