Wi-Fi system unit shipments grew from 82 million in 2004 to 140 million in 2005, and will grow to at least 185 million units in 2006. Growth will continue to more than 400 million units in 2010 propelling by new applications such as wireless game consoles, PDAs, cellphones, and home entertainment systems.
Strategy Analytics has released 'Wi-Fi Radio Component Sales Forecast 2006 2010 Update', an Excel data table that outlines the growing demand for transceivers, basebands, Power Amplifiers (PAs) and related radio components for Wi-Fi systems. The data table shows the Strategy Analytics forecast for Wi-Fi systems by application, as well as expected average selling prices and unit and dollar shipments for Wi-Fi radio components.
"Propelled by emerging Wi-Fi applications such as wireless game consoles, PDAs, cellphones, and home entertainment systems, the market for Wi-Fi chips will grow to more than USD 1.9 billion in 2006, and to USD 3 billion in 2010, said Chris Taylor, Director of the Strategy Analytics RF & Wireless Component service. The adoption of MIMO and 802.11n, which require multiple PAs, transceivers and more complex front end modules, will also have a big impact, even though certified 802.11n systems will probably not reach the market for another year," added Mr. Taylor.
