Hewlett-Packard has introduced new OpenView management solutions designed to enable chief information officers (CIOs) to transform their information technology department into more efficient and responsive business organizations.

OpenView comprises of three programs -- DecisionCenter, AssetCenter and Application Insight – that helps align IT priorities with business requirements to help businesses optimize performance, reduce risk and become more agile.

HP OpenView DecisionCenter is an IT decision support tool that uses analysis and “what if” simulations against historical service data, allowing CIOs to optimise IT staff assignments based on both service-level impact and cost. The solution uses data captured by OpenView operational and service management tools, analyses the data to derive business insight, and then acts to improve IT effectiveness and IT staff efficiency.

Features of DecisionCenter include:

  • User and role-based scorecards and dashboards that create a shared view of IT goals, performance and risk;
  • Business impact and risk assessment for business service-levels;
  • Ability to determine the historical business impact of service availability;
  • Trade-off analysis and modeling for the impact of investment and/or disinvestment in IT and how these changes improve or reduce the services delivered.

HP OpenView AssetCenter, based on technology gained through HP’s acquisition of Peregrine Systems, offers full lifecycle asset management. The solution aligns business services to the required assets, providing a framework for end users to understand the financial impact of their consumption of IT and controls for managing consumption to the budget. It automates the process of asset management, effectively improving control and return on investment while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Features of AssetCenter include:
  • Effective management of contracts and leases to maximize the value of existing investments and enable IT to reduce total cost of operations while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards;
  • Software and hardware standards enforcement to improve audit preparation and minimize risk;
  • Out-of-the-box business services support that enables IT to associate assets with services and therefore better communicate with the business;
  • A new web client that offers easier and more effective access to information and a new web services infrastructure that delivers better integration capabilities.

HP OpenView Application Insight enables IT to move beyond component-based approaches and to manage complex application environments from a business perspective. Using discovery-assisted modeling, the software groups applications and the underlying infrastructure into a tailored hierarchical model of customers and business services. It then integrates all relevant response time and resource performance data into this model, so stakeholders have a 'single version of the truth' that is up to date and complete. As a result, problems are identified and resolved faster, and the user experience is improved.

Application Insight features:
  • A performance aggregation layer with multi-dimensional monitoring and diagnosis, providing a complete 360-degree performance assessment;
  • Application discovery and rapid modeling that allows flexible multi-level hierarchies with tailored views of customer and business impact;
  • A single and reliable end-to-end view of the application, which spans the client through to back-end legacy applications and shows aggregated health and drill-down all on one screen.
